Here is a photo of Dan and Krzysztof Wielicki on the summit of Island Peak. Krzysztof Wielicki is probably one of the most famous living Polish climbers. He climbed the South Face of Lhotse (seen in the background). I am not sure if he summited. Also, he climbed Kangchenjunga in Winter with the legendary Jerzy Kukuczka.
The University of Kentucky Student Activities Board is hosting a guest lecture by world-renowned mountain climber Dan Mazur, who will share stories of his courageous expeditions on Mount Everest at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Worsham Theatre at the UK Student Center. Admission is free for all students, faculty, staff and the general public. Mazur, who has been described as a "true American hero," is widely known for his assistance and sacrifice in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber on Mount Everest in 2006.
Mazur's presentation will include a 30-minute slideshow of when he climbed Everest as a young man, an 18-minute segment on the rescue of Lincoln Hall, his near death experience on Mustagata, his amputation of his own toe in Pakistan, and the unclimbed peaks in China that he was the first to climb. He will also provide information about the Mount Everest Foundation.
Climbing Magazine named Mazur the "most successful American to ever launch an expedition." His written, photographic, and cinematic works have been featured in the American Alpine Journal, High Magazine, Climbing Magazine, Outside Magazine, the NBC "Today Show," the Discovery Channel, and Everest Newa, among many others.
